Since 1979, Tom and Linda Jones of Viborg, South Dakota, have been in the retail grocery business. They bought a grocery store in Viborg that they still operate today. Slowly, yet surely, they expanded into other Southeastern South Dakota communities. Their business was built on honesty, integrity and hometown service. In 1995, Tom and Linda’s youngest daughter Nikki and her husband Gregg Peters bought the grocery store in Vermillion, South Dakota. Eventually, they got into grocery stores in Elk Point and Parker, South Dakota. Looking to branch out and diversify, and give customers in smaller communities more options, Gregg and Nikki opened a hardware store in Vermillion under the banner, Vermillion Ace Hardware. Another followed in Madison, South Dakota, a couple years later. They also own Mister Smith’s Bakery, Café & Catering in Vermillion. Mister Smith’s is located in the Vermillion Ace Hardware and hangs their hat on being named, “Best Bread in America!” by Amy Bloom, a writer for Oprah Magazine. Mister Smith’s is THE place to eat in Vermillion with their famous sandwiches, homemade soups, salads and so much more. Finally they also operate and manage Vermillion Wine & Liquor for the City of Vermillion.
